The Sumerians were the first to develop a counting system to keep an account of their stock of goods - cattle, horses, and donkeys,

Brahmagupta, around 650 AD, was the first to formalize arithmetic operations using zero.

All invention and discovery including zero is result of necessity. A popular story about discovery of zero like apple and UREKA story of Newton and Archimedes.

The story is that It is Aryabhata that discover the today zero and also proof its necessity. As you know the Aryabhata is great mathematician even before discovery of zero. So, as usual he performing the complex mathematics calculation ( If some body know the question actually performing suggest me) get stuck and after solving these question about more than 200 times he finally understood the incompleteness of number, though he must question the validity of problem but not do it. Why?

Finally He supposed a unknown missing number, today known as zero(0).
