anirudhabist: Other people believe the game was invented in the Netherlands during the 13th, 14th or 15th century. The earliest written reference to ‘cricket’ is in a 1598 court case which noted that some boys were playing a game of ‘creckett’. Most historians believe the game was originally played by children. By the early 1600′s adults starting playing the game.

We cannot conclusively say who first invented cricket, as it is one of many games whose origins are disputed. The first record of cricket comes from a court case in England about 400 years ago, and it is possible that an older reference to King Richard II (who ruled about 600 years ago) refers to the sport as well. We can say, however, that the first standardized rules of cricket were written down in 1727 by two English nobles, Charles Lennox and Alan Broderick, since they organized a series of matches and wanted uniform rules rather than disagreement about what should be official. About 30 years later, these rules were printed for the masses and have been the standard for the game's evolution.
