By at least the 8th century BCE theGreeks borrowed the Phoenician alphabet and adapted it to their own language, creating in the process the first "true" alphabet, in which vowels were accorded equal status with consonants.

Historically, letters have existed from the time of ancient India, ancient Egypt and Sumer, through Rome, Greece and China, although it is not clear who invented it
