The word Consumer is defined in section 2(d) of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The definition states that a consumer is a person who buys or purchases any goods or services as per his needs.

Apart from this, the definition includes that Consumer doesn't include any person who purchases the goods or services for reselling purpose. A consumer can either pay directly for the goods or services or can hire them.

A ‘consumer’ is a person who spends his money to purchase goods or services for personal use. Buying a commodity for a consumer is not for the ‘purpose of business’ or resale.

Explanation:

  • According to the Consumer Act 1986, every person has the right to choose any goods or services that is in access to them.
  • It is solely the decision of the individual whether he would want to buy the ‘product or service’.
  • It is necessary for the ‘consumer’ to be aware of things so that they are able to make the right choice.
