Who is addressed by the teenager as 'sir'?

I asked this question and want to show a little precedent.

I usually address adults as sir or ma’am or perhaps Mr. Smith or Ms. Smith. I tend to go toward the formal.

But Quora’s a little odd. Teens are a little elevated. They are “smarter” and interact with adults more. And also more as equals. Most adults I know, I know as Mr. X. But say, Matthew Bates, I know as Matthew Bates.

So what do I address him as? Obviously, with respect. But should I call him sir?

And when talking to unknown people, I just treat them with respect.
