Maggie is the Angel in disguise in the story.
It's so because Maggie is a girl who is orphaned and crippled and who proves to be a blessing for the Thompsons.
While everyone left Maggie all alone, Joe Thompson, a wheel wright appeared and took Maggie in. Before meeting Maggie, Joe's wife, Mrs. Thompson was ill-tempered, irritable, and self-afflicting. Mr and Mrs Thompson had no child and therefore Mrs. Thompson had no one to take care of except for herself.
While Joe is out for work, Mrs Thompson spends time with Maggie. A change can be seen in her after this. Mrs Thompson becomes fond of Maggie and starts loving her.
The author conveys the message that Mrs Thompson needed someone to take care for, to live a happy and purposeful life and Maggie comes to be that 'someone' and hence she proves to be an Angel in disguise.
