Antonio is a wealthy merchant of Venice,whi is the dearest friend of Bassanio and is willing to even risk his life for his friend's sake. He is a philanthropist,whose kindness and generosity knows no bound as he is willing to even enter a bond with his enemy shylock to sponsor his friend Bassanio's trip to Belmont to win Portia in the game of caskets. He is a passive character in the sense thet he dies not do much in the play,but he is central character as on his weakness the plot of the play initiates.the only flaw in his character seems to be his prejudice against the Jews.
