Arthur was the older brother of Henry VIII. He would have been king after his father Henry VII had he not unfortunately died at the age of 15 in 1502, thus making his younger brother Henry the heir apparent.

Arthur was married to Catherine of Aragon for the last six months of his life; she was adamant that the marriage had not been consummated and so she was free to marry Henry in 1509. Henry used her earlier marriage as part of the reason for the annulment of their marriage in order to marry Anne Boleyn.

Prince Arthur was named for the legendary King Arthur (he of the round table), as his father wanted to strengthen the Tudor claim to the throne by having genealogists trace their ancestry to King Arthur.
