Binod Tharu was a YouTube comment that became a viral meme simply as Binod in India in August 2020. It originated from a YouTube comment by a user named Binod Tharu, that had not uploaded any videos and was only adding his first name in the comment section of YouTube videos. Binod memes started popping up, intending to troll him. The details of the YouTube user are unknown but the Tharu people are an ethnic group indigenous to the Terai in southern Nepal (mostly in Bheri and Lumbini) and northern India (mostly in Bihar, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh states).

It started when, on 15 July 2020, two YouTubers, Abhyudaya Mohan and Gauthami Kawale who run the channel "Slayy Point", uploaded a satirical video titled Why Indian Comments Section is garbage (BINOD) which examined the comments made by Indians on various YouTube channels. The video also included a single comment, Binod, which was repeatedly mentioned by a single person called Binod Tharu on every popular Indian YouTube video. The video triggered an online trend among Indians, who started to use the term "Binod" on social media posts and comments. Even on live streams of YouTube videos, "Binod" was getting spammed in the live chats.

The name Binod initially sparked memes on Twitter. Mumbai Police, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Tinder, Airtel, Disney+Hotstar and Swiggy also posted Binod memes after the emergence of the trend. Paytm changed its username for a while on Twitter after a request from a user. Netflix India referenced the meme in some of their original shows such as Sex Education and Stranger Things. State Bank of India and Mumbai Police also made use of Binod memes to warn people against online frauds. The channel, Slayy Point together also launched T-Shirts of the Binod memes.

Hope it helps......
