Mobile phone is a term that goes way back … long before cellular. Mobile radios were once thought of as radios in cars. Indeed, a mobile radio in a car that served to interconnect a full duplex telephone call was called a mobile phone.

The term changed meaning after the introduction of cellular. A mobile phone was a vehicle mount and a portable was a hand-held. But the term mobile has morphed to mean hand-held today.

I worked in Schaumburg, IL for Motorola. Martin Cooper was my boss’s boss’s boss at the time when the first cellular system was deployed in Chicago back in 1982, and Marty is often credited as the inventor of portable cellular. Portable cellular was more than just the portable phone itself … it was the unique variation of the entire cellular system layout … predominantly a 6-sector reuse pattern vs the 3-sector reuse pattern advocated by AT&T for vehicle based cellular. As cellular transitioned from 1G AMPS to various 2G digital implementations the 6-sectored antennas became less of an issue for portables, as well as the shrinking of cellular cells to minimal dimensions (micro-cells).
