America's James Connolly became the first modern Olympic champion when he won the triple jump on the opening day of the Games. For his achievement, he was awarded a silver medal and an olive branch. Connolly later finished second in the high-jump event and took third in the long jump.

Hii!! India participated at the Olympic games in 1900, with a lone athelete (Noman pitchard) winning two medals both silverin athletics. the nation first sent a team to a summer Olympic games in 1920, and participated in every summer games since then. India is also competed at several winter Olympic games biggining in 1964.
