The Chief Justice of India is the head of the judiciary of India and the Supreme Court of India. The CJI also heads their administrative functions. As head of the supreme court, the chief justice is responsible for the allocation of cases and appointment of constitutional benches which deal with important matters of law. In accordance with Article 145 of the Constitution of India and the Supreme Court Rules of Procedure of 1966, the Chief Justice allocates all work to the other judges who are bound to refer the matter back to him or her in any case where they require it to be looked into by a larger bench of more judges

According to the news report of THE HINDU, Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, accompanied by the support of other members filed a petition with 71 signatures submitted to Rajya Sabha Chairman. Just a day after Supreme Court rejected a PIL petition seeking a probe into the unusual circumstances surrounding the death of judge B.H. Loya. The nexus between the two events is not so evident as of now. However, the Congress denies that there is any nexus between these two incidents.

But let us first understand what impeachment is and the current procedure as prescribed by the constitution for the impeachment of a Supreme Court Chief Justice. Article 124(4) of the constitution of India prescribes the procedure for impeachment of supreme court judges which also includes Chief Justice.
