the gram bhojaka was often the largest landowner. he had slaves and hired workers to cultivate his land. the king also used him to collect taxes from villages and sometimes he performed like a judge  and also like a policeman

In the northern part of the country the village headman is called GRAMBHOJAKA. He is often known as largest land owner. He is powerful. Kings often used them to collect taxes from the villagers. He sometimes functioned as a judge and sometimes as police man.
