Burmese freedom fighter ''Aung San Suu Kyi is known as the Gandhi of Burma because of her strong determination to establish democratic government again in Burma.
She studied in Delhi University where she got to know about the Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence resistance.
At that time Burma was following Democratic form of Government but in few years a military head won elections and started dictatorship in Burma . As Aung San Suu Kyi got to know about that she started following Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence.
Suu Kyi helped in creation of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in 1988 and went on for extensive campaign tours throughout the country. Her commitment to nonviolence came to the first once when during one of her tours she was confronted by soldiers. When the soldiers threatened to shoot Aung San Suu Kyi, she asked her companions to step aside and walked up to and past the rifles aimed at her.
She received Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
She also won the First Democratic election after her struggle to get Democratic government back into work, The election was conducted on 15th Nov. 2015 and she won it from her NLD party.

There are many rules in Myanmar about who can become a president, Suu Kyi was not able to be a president due to these rules. Instead, she became the State Counsellor of Myanmar, a job that is even higher than being president.
She is sometimes called Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Daw is not part of her name, but a title for older women. This name shows respect to her.
