Kaila Devi is also known as Mahisasurmardini. The term means slayer of Mahisasura.

Mahishasura was a demon in buffalo avatar in Hindu mythology. He received a boon from Lord Brahma that no male could slay him.    

He was also forever at war against the Gods and defeated Lord Indra. It was then all the Devas assembled together and transformed their divine energies into Goddess Durga. She took him for a fight and killed him. This story is a part of various religious stories.
