Razia Sultan (a.k.a. Razia Sultana) was the first and last female ruler of the Delhi Sultanate.

She was born to the third ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, called Iltutmish, who had originally arrived as a slave under Qutb-ud-din Aibak. After Aibak's death, Iltutmish gathered support and trust to become the king and reigned for several years.
On his deathbed, Iltutmish declared that none of his sons were fit to rule his territories, and hence chose his daughter Razia to be his heiress, thus creating history by nominating a female ruler.

The administration originally refused to accept a woman as their ruler, and hence nominated Iltutmish's oldest son to the throne. It wasn't until he died that Razia could claim the throne.

Razia refused to be called 'Sultana' as it was used to refer to the wife of the king. To highlight her importance, she preferred to be called 'Razia Sultan', at par with any other male ruler.

As she was trained in warfare from her childhood, she proved to be a good warrior and won many battles. It is believed that she ruled from 1236 till 1240, when she was killed in a conflict.

Thus, Razia Sultan created history for being the first and last female ruler of the Delhi Sultanate.

Raziya Sultana (1205 - 1240) was the first and last ruler of Delhi Sultanate. She ruled over the Sultanate for 4 years, from 1236 to 1240.

Raziya Sultana belonged to the Mamluk dynasty and was King Illtutmish's favourite daughter. As a small child, she had access to the King's court and other places reserved for the King and nobility. As she grew older, she was trained in the art of warfare and administrative matters.

She succeeded her elder brother Nasiruddin Mahmud, after his early death in 1229.
