Panchanan Karmakar  is known as the Gutenberg of Bengal because he cut the first-ever fonts and type of Bengali language and thus contributed in developing Bengali printing press.

He belonged to the family of calligraphists and was a goldsmith by profession. The christian missionaries wanted to print Bengali books and Grammar but there was no Bengali type. So Karmakar was assigned the task and he developed the first typeface for printing under the supervision of English typographer Charles Wilkins.
