Laura Hinkle was a member of the author's wife's Book Club. She had come to their home to play at the Ouija board. They had decided to sit at the boards in pairs but, at the last moment, the Book Club members got to know that one of their members, Mrs. William Augustus Wainright, could not come. This left Laura without a partner and so the author was asked to take the absent member's place.
