Lochinvar is a young gallant. He had just come out of the west in the poem. He was faithful in love and dauntless in war.
He rode to the Netherby Hall because he was in love with the fair lady "Ellen". Ellen was getting married to someone else and he didn't want that and so he went there and at the end of the poem, he took Ellen with him and they drove off to the Cannobie Lee.
