"Earthquake", written by M.S. Mahadevan, is a story about a seventeen year old boy, named Brij. He states his story to a traveler that his village had faced a terrible earthquake which lasted less than five minutes and destroyed six hundred and two (602) villages out of six hundred and seventy (670) villages in that area.

Fortunately, Brij was away that night to buy school books. His brother, mother, and grandmother could not survive that earthquake. During the search, rescuers found all the corpses of his family except his little sister. She was eventually found by an army officer. She had been buried under the debris for a hundred and sixteen hours.

After that tragic incident in his life, Brij and his sister went to live with his uncle. He got a job at a Dhaba near Panipat after some time. His sister started going to school again after some time. Brij tells the traveler that he never got the chance to thank that Army Officer who saved his sister and he hopes that one day he would get a chance to thank the Officer. Every time he saw an Army man, he would hope it was him. For months he would search for his face in every crowd. And one day, he did find him.

At the point when they returned the following morning, every one of the structures were smoothed and the entire town was diminished to rubble. It was an overwhelming sight. All his relatives' dead bodies were found aside from his child sister Bhuli. He proceeded to scramble where his home had stood; he weeped for a really long time together. The military official appeared to be bone-tired yet was adequately caring to begin the hunt once more. Shockingly, Bhuli was tracked down alive in two hours or less! Brij and his sister went with their uncle. Bhuli began tutoring while Brij got himself a line of work at a Dhaba. It burdened him intensely that he was unable to thank the military official before he left. He began looking for the military official in each group. However, he had no karma.
