mars is the roman god of war. the usage of mars in his poem "not marble nor gilded monuments is significant. he describes his poem as a piece of relic which could withstand the time and survive its ravages.

the poet uses mars in this context that neither the roman god of war who is known for his destruction and fieresome nature nor the time couldnt destroy his literature which was written in the honour of his friend, such was the power of his poen.
