Mr Wicksteed was a man of forty-five or forty-six, steward to Lord Burdock, of inoffensive habits and appearance and possibly the very last person on earth to provoke someone enough to get murdered by him. Mr Wicksteed's body was found on the edge of a grave; pit, not two hundred yards from Lord Burdock's lodge gate.
