Munshi Premchand was arguably the greatest

writer of Hindi literature. Some of his works were

also written in Urdu. His real name was Dhanpat

Rai, and he was born in a village near Varanasi. He wrote novels, poetry and dramas, and was known as the Upanyas Samrat, or the king of novels."

Most of Premchand's works were based on the real settings of poverty and injustice he himself lead as a villager. His style was simple, realistic and relatable, written for the most common of men. The themes his works were based on included poverty, corruption, caste system, exploitation, prostitution, etc. Most of these stories painted desolate pictures of the lives of his protagonists, suffering under the agony they were unrelentingly put through by society and its ways.

His works provided an emotional connect for its

readers - not just for the poor, but also for others who, he ensures, bond with his characters and their miseries. Some of his most well-known short stories are Idgah, Kafan, Poos Ki Raat, Do Bailon Ki Katha, Sava Ser Gehun, etc. Mansarovar is the most known collection of his short stories, split into 8 volumes.
