Answers
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a Corsican soldier and hero of the wars between revolutionary France and the other powers of Europe following the French Revolution in 1789. Napoleon became a very successful general, conquering Italy after invasions in 1796 and 1800 and then eventually seized the throne of France, becoming Emperor of the French in 1804. Napoleon’s military skills and the military power of France meant that by 1812 Western Europe was dominated by the French Empire. However, an alliance of countries eventually defeated Napoleon, firstly in 1814 and then again after his return and 100 days campaign in 1815 at the battle of Waterloo. Napoleon died, imprisoned on the remote island of St Helena in 1821.
