Ngo Dinh Diem was a South Vietnamese leader, who became Prime Minister in 1954. He was assassinated on 2nd November, 1963. Diem was born into a Vietnamese Catholic family. He imprisoned and murdered hundreds of Buddhists to break up the civil resistance movement led by Buddhist monks. The crises was actually precipitated by the Government's shooting down of nine unarmed civilians in May 1963, who were protesting a ban of the Buddhist flag. The crisis ended with a Military coup and the eventual assassination of Ngo Dinh Diem.
