A commando is a soldier or operative of an elite light infantry or special operations forceoften specializing in amphibious landings, parachuting or abseiling. In the militaries and governments of most countries, commandos are distinctive in that they specialize in assault on unconventional high-value targets. However, the term commando is sometimes used in relation to units carrying out the latter tasks (including some civilian police units). Commandos differ from other types of special forces in that they primarily operate in overt combat, front-line reconnaissance, and raiding, rather than long range reconnaissance and unconventional warfare.

Para Commandos or Paratroopers are soldiers who have been trained to drop from aircraft using parachutes. Thats pretty obvious. But over the last 2–3 decades, there was a growing realization that paratroopers need to be trained not just for air drop but also for carrying out dangerous missions behind the enemy lines.

That required some special skills and equipment. Nowadays, in the Indian Army there are 6 para brigades and out of those, 3 are Para SF (special forces.)

These soldiers go through an extensive training over a period of 2–3 years AFTER completing their basic paratrooper course. They have to undergo:

Ghatak Commando Course

High-Altitude Mountain Warfare course

Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare course

Desert Warfare course

Basic Combat Diving course

Combat Free Fall (HAHO & HALO) course

Upon completion of these courses, they will be earn their Special Forces badge! And these are the very soldiers who are the “knife’s edge” when it comes to operations in mountainous areas of India, like J&K and North-East. They form the core of counter-insurgency grid in these border hotspots. Also, in times of war, they will be tasked with the most dangerous missions behind enemy lines.
