Clive died in 1774, reportedly killed himself. Interestingly, he was buried in an unmarked grave without a plaque. While he left no killing note, the writer Samuel Johnson wrote of his death that he “had acquired his fortune by such crimes that his consciousness of them impelled him to cut his own throat”.
