Robert Koch (1843-1910)

Koch was a German scientist who is regarded as the father of modern germ (bacteria) technology. He showed that diseases were not caused by a mysterious unknown substance, but by Bacteria Living organisms. Once this was known, it was easier to try to find a cure. He isolated the germs behind tuberculosis, one of the most dreaded diseases of the time, and showed how it could be diagnosed by examination of spit. He also isolated anthrax bacteria deadly animal disease which is equally fatal in human beings.

In 1883 he went to India, where a cholera epidemic was killing  many thousands of people. He isolated these bacteria too, thus  showing the mechanism whereby cholera was spread, mainly by  drinking contaminated water. Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize  in 1905.
