Ramanujan showed that, if you were extremely determined and creative, you could be an Euler-style formalist centuries after everyone thought that that kind of math was completely mined out.

 Most mathematicians attack a problem in such a way that they can see, at least in very rough outlines, from the beginning to the end. 

Ramanujan appears to have simply started at a particular point and expanded outwards, allowing him to get to places that others wouldn't even have thought of trying to go.  This approach had been popular in the 18th century, to the point it appeared to any reasonable person to have been pushed to its limits.  As usual, common sense turned out to be dead wrong.
