Answer:
Ruskin Bond
The Tiger in the Tunnel by Ruskin Bond.
This is a narrative about a watchman and his experiences with a tiger hiding in a tunnel. With this in mind, Bond begins the book with Baldeo, who is accountable for using the signal to tell others about obstacles that might encumber tunnel movements. He works the nightshift, making sure that the lamp keeps burning so that the overland mail can pass through securely.
It is here, that Bond introduces another character, Tembu, Baldeo’s son. Both Baldeo and Tembu live in a tribal village that is three miles off the station. Baldeo is forced to take upo the job as a watchman as he isn't earning as much as necessary from the rice fields.
Bond injects conflict into the storyline when the signal light goes out. Baldeo hears an animal sound. His concern for Tembu is heightened, because the latter is asleep unprotected. Baldeo realizes that the huge body of the animal is a tiger approaching him. Both Baldeo and the tiger fight, resulting in the tiger being injured and Baldeo dying.
From the beginning of the story the readers have an evil foreboding that something awful is likely to happen to Baldeo. Their foreboding is proved right as the story unfolds. The author has created an atmosphere of fear and tension by defining the eeriness of the night, the noises in the jungle, the neighbouring hills which overhung the main railway line, the deep cutting that led to the tunnel, etc. The suspense grows as Baldeo enters the tunnel and sees the huge body of the tiger trotting steadily towards him. When the author says, "Flight was useless, for in the dark the tiger would be more sure-footed than Baldeo and would soon be upon him from behind", the readers are almost sure that their foreboding would come true.
Tragedy and the sense of loss have been portrayed well by the author. The readers' heart is moved by the fate Baldeo meets at the hands of the tiger. Their approbation for Baldeo grows when they see him gallantly fighting the tiger, despite knowing that the chances of his survival are little. The readers sympathise with Baldeo's family when his twelve-year-old son, Tembu, after performing his father's last rites, takes up his job in order to help feed the family.
