The chief architect of the British Empire in India was Sir Edwin Lutyens.
- He is known particularly for his design of New Delhi and his plan of the Viceroy's House there.
- Around 1910 Lutyens moved to bigger, common undertakings, and in 1912 he was chosen to suggest the planning of the new Indian capital at Delhi.
- In his single most noticeable structure, the Viceroy's House (1913-30), he consolidated parts of traditional design with elements of Indian beautification.
- After World War I Lutyens became a planner for the Imperial War Graves Commission, for which he planned the Cenotaph, London (1919-20), the Great War Stone (1919), and military burial grounds in France.
- His immense task for the Roman Catholic church at Liverpool was deficient at his passing.
