In the 19th century, it was commonly believed that an organism's traits were passed on to offspring in a blend of characteristics 'donated' by each parent.Gregor Mendel is known as the Father of Genetics. He worked on pea plants and discovered the fundamental laws of inheritance.

His three laws are the law of dominance, the law of segregation and the law of independent assortment.
