Answer: I don’t think there is a single father of modern agriculture, but one who is definitely worthy of recognition is John Nix. As a Brit involved in agriculture, he wrote THE book on margin based farm management.

Every single farmer I know in the UK owns at least one copy of the Farm Management Pocketbook, first published in 1966, it is updated nearly every year and is currently in its 49th Edition.

It is the most complete set of data about the costings of farming in the UK, allowing farmers to compare their costs, giving farmers numbers to base their decisions on and ways to calculate their own efficiency. Thus making agriculture more of a science than it had ever been previously.

His influence on the industry here in the UK is undeniable.

John Nix died on the 14th of March 2018, aged 90.
