The first Assamese woman graduate were the sisters were Sudhalata Dowarah and Sukhalata Dowarah.

EXPLANATION:

The uplift of Assamese women during the colonial rule was rather slow. The Assamese patriarchy did not encourage women education. Thus the number of girl students were almost nil. With the advent of the American Christian Missionaries and also the British officials, girls’ schools began to be established in the later decades of the nineteenth century.

In the first three decades of the twentieth century Assamese girls began to seek higher education especially from the newly formed girls’ colleges in Shillong.

Sudhalata Dowarah and Sukhalata Dowarah were the first Assamese women graduates. They were sisters and graduated together.
