Portugal was the first country to rule India.  They invaded India in the year 1526 and captured the territory of Goa.  Vasco Da Gama was made the Viceroy of Goa because he found the sea route to India.  The British followed next by setting up East India company and destroyed the Mughals in the Battle of Plassey during 1757.
