Bhai Maharaj Singh, the spiritual leader and fervent Sikh nationalist, is the first freedom fighter of India of note who took up weapons against the British rule in 1847, ten years before the First war of Independence and fought fervently till he was arrested on December 29, 1849 and imprisoned in Outram Jail Singapore where he died on 5th July 1856.

Born in village Rabbon near Malaud, Ludhiana Distt. in a Grewal family, Bhai Maharaj Singh’s parents named him Nihal Singh. As a young lad, he went to stay at Bhai Bir Singh's Dera at Naurangabad where he did relentless exemplary service for many years. He was so dedicated in his service that he cooked meals for thousands of visiting devotees single handedly. He recited Lord’s Name every moment and brought water for his guru and guide Bhai Bir Singh daily at 3 AM without a day’s break. He took Amrit at the hands of Bhai Bir Singh and was given the name Bhagwan Singh. It was the time when the Dogras were playing their dirty games in the Raj and killing of Shahizadas was done at convenience. General Attar Singh Sandhanwalla and Prince Kashmira Singh took refuge in his dera to avoid the brunt of Dogras.
