Before 1978 all climbers who had Crested everest had done it with the aid of supplemental oxygen.

Then came Italian reinhold messner and his partner Peter Habeler, they were determined decline without it for them it would be strictly be man against the mountain.

On May 8th 1978 Messner and Habeler left the south col situated at approximately 26,000 feet and pressed for the tip of the world. They took 40 steps at a time and rested. By the time they reached the Hillary step just below the summit paddler could not feel his arms but he had gotten too far to turn back he dragged himself to the summit while Messner captured the moment on film.

Not only they reached the peak without oxygen but they have done it in recorded time 8 hours. On average climbers who use oxygen take 12 hours to reach the summit from their last camp.
