The lady in Portrait of a lady is Grandmother of Author.
In the Story "The Portrait of a lady" the author (Khushwant Singh) draws a pen portrait of his grand mother. She and author live together in the village. They shared their feelings to each other. Grand mother would give him A stalk peice of bread with sugar spread on it. She also took him to school and at that time she visit to The Temple. And she feed street dogs in the way to school. Grand mother helped him in Homework. Then author's parents called them both to the Town then their lives were changed completely. She could no longer helped him in his studies as there was no teaching of God and Scriptures. He was reached western science there. She spend here time in telling her beads and recruting prayers. Then author was send to Abroad for studies then common link between then was snapped. He was given separate room. When author was coming to the home she celebrated it whole night and then died because of getting sick .
