Lord Mountbatten was the first Governor-General of independent India and the last Viceroy of the British Indian Empire.

Mountbatten was named Viceroy of India in March 1947, and he presided over the partition of British India into India and Pakistan. From June 1948 to June 1949, he was India's first Governor-General.

In his capacity as Viceroy of India (March–August 1947), he oversaw the transfer of sovereignty from Britain to the newly independent states of India and Pakistan following the subcontinent's partition on August 14–15, 1947. He then helped persuade the Indian princes to unite their states into either India or Pakistan as governor-general of India (August 1947–June 1948).
