Answer:

Savitri was a virtuous princess of ancient India. She married Satyavan, the son of the exiled king of Salaya. She married his although she knew he was fated to die one year after their marriage. On the appointed day, when Satyavan went to the forest to cut wood, she accompanied him. While chopping wood his head began to hurt. Savitri laid her husband's head on her lap and soothed him.

While sitting thus in the shade of a large tree, Savitri saw Yama approaching them. On being asked the purpose of his visit, Yama said that he is taking Satyavan. He went with Satyavan's soul. Savitri followed him. Yama was impressed with her devotion. He asked her for any boon except Satyavan's life. Savitri requested him to let her father in law regain his kingdom which was eventually granted. She still followed him and Yama asked for another boon. Savitri asked him to grant her parents many sons. This was granted. Next, she asked for many children for herself. Yama granted this. Savitri explained him that he must restore Satyavan's life in order to fulfill his promise. Hence, his life was restored and all the boons Savitri asked were too fulfilled.
