The Deputy Prime Minister of India is a member of the Union Council of Ministers in the Government of India. Not a constitutional office, it seldom carries any specific powers. A deputy prime minister usually also holds a cabinet portfolio such as home minister or finance minister.

Explanation:

PM Modi announced publicly on 8 Nov 2016 the schedule for changing old 500 and 1000 currency notes. As per the announcement, exchange of notes after 31 December can be done at RBI counters upto 31 march 2017.

The Government REFUSED to change old currencies after 31 December. A writ petition is awaiting judgement at the apex court in this regard.

The plea of the writ was that how can the Government refuse to follow the PM's publicly announced exchange schedule.

This act of the Government reflects the hollowness of the prime minister's proclaimation on national media on 8 November and raises the question as to who is the voice of the nation's PM? It is not Narendra Modi in this instance!
