It was written by Delhi-native Lala Srinivas Das and was published in 1882. It was reprinted in 1974 with an introduction by Ramdaras Mishra. This novel is not as well known because Bengali novels of those times were love sagas wrapped in fantasies.It was a moralising novel .
(a) It reflects the inner and outer world of the newly emerged middle classes.

(b) It reflects the difficulty faced by characters in adopting the colonised society.

(c) The novel tries to teach the right way to live and remain rooted in traditional values.

(d) The young are urged to cultivate the 'healthy habit' of reading newspapers.
