In A Slander by Anton Chekhov we have the theme of class, gossip, conflict, appearance, paranoia, trust and responsibility. The key characters in the story are Ahineev and Vankin
Explanation:
- Vankin was the assitant usher ( assistant to the school writing master Ahineev) had teased Ahineev that he had thought ahineev was kissing the cook Marfa, when Ahineev had gone to check the food in the kitchen that was being prepared for the wedding of his daugther, and Ahineev was appreciating the food by smacking his lips. Actually Vankin only said that as joke to Ahineev and was rather pulling his Ahinvee's Legs.
- However, Ahineev was paranoid about what Vankin might say to the other guests and thought that Vankin might go around slandering him by telling lies to the other guests about Ahineev having kissed Marfa; in real, Vankin had not uttered or said anything of that sort to the other guests. Vankin had even assured Ahineev that he did not slander him, this shows his sincerity without doubt
- It was Ahineev himself who had gone around justifying the incident in the kitchen and that vankin passed such as remark at Ahineev (he kissing marfa). It is as though Ahineev has an image to uphold and he does not wish others to see him in an unfavorable or embarrassing light. The reader sensing that image or appearance is important to Ahineev.
- Thus Ahineev himself was repsonsible for his slander but held Vankin repsonsible for it. An innocent comment from Vankin caused Ahineev nothing more than trouble, but he does not want to accept responsibility. He has been revealed to others, who mistakenly took up his story incorrectly and wounded Ahineev.
