                         My Role Model

People are born; people die. But some people after they are gone leave behind them a trail of light that illumines the path for the striving followers. Longfellow has praised such people in his poem, 'A Psalm of Life'. He says:

"Lives of great men all remind us,

We can make our lives sublime,

And, departing, leave behind us

Footprints on the sands of time;"

The personage who is my role model is Helen Keller. She belongs to the same class of inspiring personages as have been described in the above written lines of Longfellow. She was a prodigy child, who had to fight the innumerable challenges since her early childhood! The challenges she faced were quite arduous---as if Nature had planned a special obstacle course for her to help her bring her best out! After being rendered blind and disabled in hearing and speaking, Helen's frustration to learn more and more about life mounted very high. Her hearing disability combined with visual disability made the teaching and learning more challenging. Helen was a very industrious girl; she always did her best to learn. She had such a natural, innate passion for learning which always motivated her. Manual alphabet, reading, arithmetic, etc., all were formidable challenges for her initially, but Helen overcame them. The most arduous of all of them was learning to speak. Learning to speak is almost an impossible task for those who have hearing disability. So Helen had to work very hard. She had to repeat each word and sentence many times for the right tone and pronunciation. She practiced untiringly. At times she became discouraged and weary too, but she never gave up.

She faced all the difficulties courageously. Her courage and perseverance are source of inspiration for all mankind. The mental anguish she had to face was very excruciating for her. She showed unprecedented courage, unwavering resolve, iron will, and patience and ultimately overcame her handicaps. She earned name and fame and set an example for the rest of the world that no obstacle is bigger than a positive man's strength to overcome them. She has made the world a more beautiful place by spreading her light around. She is the perfect epitome of optimism and dogged determination. The present generation can learn many lessons of patience, perseverance, optimism, sublimation, dedication, and never-say-die-attitude from such a pillar of light.
