The Jaintia revolt of 1861 was led by (A) U Kiang Nangbah.
- U Kiang Nangbah belonged to the Pnar tribe and was a freedom fighter who later died after the British hanged him. Back in 1860, income taxes were levied along with house taxes. Beetle nuts were also going to be taxed. Taxation sparked the rebellion in Jaintia.
- As the leader of this rebellion, U Kiang was to be credited. It was because of the concealment of his identity that he was able to communicate with the Sardars and Dolois without being suspected during the first rebellion.
- The British Intelligence Service was even unaware of his activities, so he was able to deceive them. In addition to being an intelligent and organized individual, he was also a very spirited kind of person.
- But in the end, he had to surrender to the British. He did not win this battle and was hanged on the 30th of December in the year 1862. Though he remains immortal through his warrior-like spirit and extraordinary personality and the very spirit of wanting to achieve freedom makes him different from all.
