Earlier, the weavers had freedom to weave whatever they wanted. After the company came in to power, there was demand for block printed cloth like chintz and calico. The company wanted to procure the goods at a lower cost and sell it abroad at a higher price for mercantile trade. To cut down the cost, the company forced local weavers to weave the type of cloth and the pattern given to them by the company at a lower prive. Such weavers were forced by the company to live in black towns like Madras and Bombay.
