Under Mahatma Gandhi the first ever peasant movement in the context of Indian freedom movement took place in Assam in 1861AD. The aim of the movement was to protest against the British's two hundred year rule and to revolt against the British Administration. The answer is peasants of Phulaguri.
The first conspiracy to send the British away from Assam were the peasants of Phulaguri, a remote village in the state. Known as Phulaguri Dhawa, the revolt was a failure but it caused a drastic impact on the foundation set by the British rule. The conspiracy took place to protest against the high taxes put forth by the British on the farmers on the cultivation of betel nut and leaf. The British always focused on the best interests of the British tea planters. The result of the conspiracy was the death of a British official and injury to many police officers.
Later under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the Champaran movement took place.
