The convict was a hard working and honest man but circumstances made him steal some food for his sick wife. He was caught and sent to prison, where he was treated like an animal and tortured endlessly. This changed him into a hard and unfeeling man. He became a beast in the sense that he lost all humanity. He was unconcerned about many things. He was very harsh towards the bishop who was being kind to him. He did not feel that the bishop was being kind to him out of humanity but doubted his integrity. He was willing to kill anyone in order to save his own life.

The convit was beaten In Jail Where The PoliceMen Made him Beasts. They made to the present situation because He was Found Guilty Of Stealing but he was stealing for a good cause i.e he had no money and his wife was starving to death.
