Thomas Newcomen invented a steam engine in 1712. This engine was used to in coalmines because the coalmines often were flooded. The engine was not very efficient but since it was used in the coalmines, coal was practically “free”. James Watt was later able to improve the efficiency significantly. The great improvements of the steam engine made the engine useful for other purposes.
