Invasive bacteria such as Salmonella, Listeria, Yersinia, Shigella and Mycobacterium bovis BCG have been used as vaccine vectors, capable of mounting potent humoral and cellular immune responses. Since these are pathogenic bacteria they were attenuated to generate suitable non-pathogenic vaccine strains.
